“𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮, 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵.”
This was the first Science Café after the consortium meeting in Palermo from the Young Experts who joined this meeting and shared their impressions.The pleasant and easy connection with the rest of the team helped to make it a very good experience.
During the presentation of Euro Youth Mental Health in Palermo young experts clarified different stages of working with experienced experts. In an interactive session the whole team could reflect on the fact that it can be difficult to really co-create. The most striking insight was that people are sometimes scared to say or do something triggering. Of course in Youth-GEMs all co-creative research steps are carefully prepared and guided. The process is valuated by both researchers and young experts. It’s inspirational!
Besides being inspirational, the co-creative process with experienced experts also improves the impact of Youth-GEMs. Erika van Hell (Neuroscientist and Project Manager), elaborated on this theme with the young experts.
The aim of Youth-GEMs is to get more (biological) understanding of genetic and environmental factors influencing the transition from mental health to mental illness. Therefore trajectories in mental ill/health are analysed in order to find predictive markers for mental health trajectories. In the end we want young people to benefit from the outcomes of the project. Therefore it is important to exploit the outcomes, meaning that there is proactive acceptance and continued use of the outcomes by the “target groups” for their own purpose.
Young experts think target groups can be reached:
💬 via social media;
💬 via existing mental health organisations in the different countries;
💬 through word of mouths and ambassadors;
💬 through schools/institutions that interact with young people/their parents;
💬 via (school) psychologists and clinicians;
💬 and via online platforms and specific magazines.
Besides sharing outcomes of research in lay language and accessible forms (podcast, video’s), they think e-learnings and actual information for young people and especially for the people surrounding them could be helpful.
