For Aldar Cabrelles Muñoz, the Internet has always been more than just a tool: it has been a lifeline. Growing up, when the world around him felt difficult, online spaces became his safe haven: places to connect, to play, to share stories, and to learn from people across the globe. Those experiences shaped not only how he sees the world, but also how deeply he values connection, inclusion, and making sure no one feels alone in their struggles.
Today, Aldar brings that same spirit into his work for Youth-GEMs. As part of Work Package 3, he works as a Data Coordinator and Curator at the European Genome-Phenome Archive (EGA), where he helps make complex data more accessible, understandable, and interoperable across fields. Just as he once created safe spaces online, Aldar now contributes to a study that aims to ensure young people’s voices and experiences are heard, valued, and translated into meaningful research.
His journey shows how personal experience and professional dedication can come together to build something bigger: a project that helps young people across Europe feel seen, supported, and connected: whether online, offline, or in science.
In this blog, he shares more on his journey.
Meet Aldar
I’m Aldar, someone that jokingly says that was born in Barcelona, but that moved to the Internet by the age of 15. That has kind of turned to be my theme! That is not to say that I do not have local friends that I love dearly, but I am someone that has known how difficult it can be to have a rough environment in your daily life, where you find a need to isolate yourself. Now, that was a sentence, but I promise it’s okay. I’m okay. Or better, at the very least! Just putting it out there for that person that may need to know they don’t go through their struggles alone.
As I get out of my shell and start a life that I am grabbing by my own hands for the first time, it helps me to look back and see that nobody should go through mental struggles alone, and that I was lucky enough to find the support of so many people around me, both in real life, and online. Who knows how far I would have made it without their unconditional love! It may not be a surprise to hear how happy I was to be offered a position to work in this study, helping people that may have gone through similar experiences to mine. When I was told to make a little description to show the more humane side of the researchers, I thought it would be a sweet opportunity to show the facets of how different things can be for everyone compared to how they look, even if as people we hold more common grounds than many may imagine.
I have spent so many hours online in my free time, and despite how hostile things can get to be in most social websites, I like to think I have made my own safe oasis in a place like that. Be it spending time in online calls with people, watching series or movies together, or playing online games such as the Critically Acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, I can safely say I have had a lot of fun carrying so many stories from people all across the globe. It has been an unending learning experience.
I like to see myself as a Citizen of the World, but instead of doing it by flying to places and seeing everything in road trips and hiking (which hey, they are things I still want to do someday!), I have lived through it underground, connected with millions of people in ways that are not seen by most. Be it Chile, Argentina, Mexico… be it the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, France… be it Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines… I have met and learned about so many different cultures, all by people that may be sharing the same experiences as those that will take part in a study like this one. That, and it is also always sweet when I am told that people have met each other because of me. Sometimes, in the most extreme of cases, people that will marry each other because of it, too! And that was without leaving my room.
To the person reading this, know that we are working really hard to make sure you are not unseen, or unheard. Maybe we have raided together in FFXIV at some point already and you didn’t know!😉If you hadn’t heard of it yet, you may be happy to know that it has quite the extensive Free Trial. I don’t think I need to tell you this, but it feels good to be the hero of your own journey.
