- February 27, 2025
On Tuesday, February 11, Hanske Douwenga, a researcher with the Youth Gems study, participated in the ‘Clicks & Concerns: Youth and Online’ conference. Organized by UNICEF, the Municipality of Amsterdam, and Mind Us—a foundation dedicated to promoting the mental well-being of young people (ages 12-27) and preventing mental health issues through early intervention—the event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the digital experiences of youth.
Among the notable attendees was Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, honorary chair of Mind Us. The central theme of the conference focused on a critical question: How can we collectively create a safe and mentally healthy digital environment for children and young people?
Hanske Douwenga led a breakout session where experts from various fields, including education, policy, politics, media, and science, explored the pedagogical and ethical challenges posed by AI in relation to youth mental well-being. The session facilitated meaningful discussions and marked the first steps toward coalition-building among key stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to develop guidelines for the responsible use of AI in shaping the digital world of young people.
This conference represents a significant step forward in ensuring a safer and more supportive online space for youth, reinforcing the commitment of organizations and policymakers to address the evolving challenges of the digital age.
