First part of this Science Café was dedicated to an overview of the work-in-progress within all research groups of Youth-GEMs. After that, Marta Ferrer was present to inform and discuss with Young Experts about the work in our clinical work package 7.
Parameters as markers for mental health?
The aim of work package 7 is to give clinical meaning to the results of different studies and data that are collected in the different European countries and Australia, and to develop an assessment battery that clinicians can use for help-seeking young people (12-24 yrs old). In order to do so, biological, clinical, psychological and cognitive data are collected and young people who seek help for the first time in their lives are asked to give a digital self-report every 3 months for 2 years (by using an app on their smartphones).
Marta and the Young Experts discussed about parameters as markers for mental health. A selection of the various comments and suggestions:
- It can be very different for each individual what a good indicator for their mental health is.
- Clinicians should overthink thoroughly whether it is helpful to give young children a diagnosis (even if it is helpful for the parents), since it may stigmatize and cause mental problems in adolescence.
- Pay attention to so-called glimmers besides triggers. Glimmers are factors that turn your mood in a positive way and make you more resilient.
- Hormones and the menstrual cycle can be important factors.
