Reflecting on meaningful patient and public involvement in research and policy
- March 30, 2026
Dr. Simona Karbouniaris, social scientist and WP2 leader at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, recently participated in the Academy of Medical Sciences X Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (AMS–KNAW) event on Meaningful Patient & Public Involvement in Strategic Choices in London.
The event brought together researchers, experts, and policy leaders from the UK and the Netherlands to reflect on a key question: how can patients and the public be meaningfully involved in shaping strategic decisions in research and health policy? The discussions in London highlighted that meaningful involvement goes far beyond consultation. It requires trust, genuine collaboration, and a commitment to embedding lived experience and citizen perspectives in how priorities are set and how policies are designed.
Although this was not a Youth-GEMs event, the project was brought into the conversation as an example of good practice of how young people can be meaningfully involved in research. The event provided an inspiring opportunity to exchange ideas across borders and disciplines, and to explore practical ways to strengthen patient and public involvement in science and healthcare. The reflections and insights gained will continue to inform participatory approaches within Youth-GEMs and related work in research and practice.
