This Youth-GEMS Science Café brought together researchers, ethicists and young experts to discuss two pressing themes in youth mental health research: the ethical implications of AI-supported tools and the responsible management of sensitive data.
Ethics and AI: Who Decides and How?
Dorothee Horstkötter (Work Package 2) led a deep dive into the ethical landscape surrounding the development of the AI-supported Youth-GEMs app(s). She posed fundamental questions: What does it mean to make decisions using AI? Who gets to decide? And how can young people and experts from different disciplines truly collaborate in shaping such a tool?
Dorothee reflected on the collaborative interviews held last year with young advisors, psychiatrists, engineers, and social scientists. This multilogue approach uncovered both the promise and complexity of co-creating an app intended to empower youth and support mental health. Key discussion points included:
- What “mental health” and “empowerment” mean across disciplines.
- Whether young users understand how the app works—and how much they want to know.
- Concerns about privacy, autonomy, and the psychological effects of constant digital monitoring.
Why Data Management Matters
Liina Nagirnaja (Work Package 3) brought data management to life with an unexpected metaphor: planning a wedding. From collecting RSVPs (data collection) to choosing tablecloth colors (data organization) and keeping the dress reveal a surprise (data security), Liina laid out why thoughtful planning is essential when working with data in across Youth-GEMS. She emphasized the sensitivity of clinical and genomic data—both personally identifying and ethically complex. Through discussions with young people, the team explored why and when they’d be willing to share data for the public good, and what protections would need to be in place. Liina also outlined the legal landscape, including EU regulations and the ever-present balance between open science and privacy protection.
As Youth-GEMS continues to generate meaningful insights and tools, this Science Café, facilitated by the team of Euro Youth Mental health, reaffirmed the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration and putting ethical reflection at the heart of research.
