On 24 March 2026, Youth-GEMs hosted Science Café #40, bringing together young experts and researchers for an open discussion on both the GEMMY app and the clinical innovation study.
The session began with introductions, an ice-breaker, and a check-in to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
GEMMY App Update
In the first part of the session, Laura Giani (Researcher at Ab.Acus) shared how feedback from young experts and Dutch students has already led to several improvements in the GEMMY app, a wellbeing app for young people aged 14–26. The grounding activities in the app were seen as one of the strongest parts of the app, especially the 5 senses exercise, which was described as helpful for therapy and coping with panic. Participants also suggested adding more guidance, more music options, and more educational content around coping strategies.
Research Participation
The second part of the Science Café focused on the clinical study, presented by Ana Echevarría (MSc) and Emily Guerra (MSc), who are both Research Assistants and PhD Candidates at Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, Spain. They explained how young people participating in the Youth-GEMs study help researchers better understand mental health challenges and improve future support.
The study includes:
- biological samples (blood or saliva),
- clinical interviews,
- neuropsychological assessments,
- and questionnaires.
The discussion focused on how to make this experience more comfortable and meaningful for participants. The group discussed for example how blood and saliva collection can feel stressful or unpleasant.
Emily shared that the study has now recruited more than 500 participants, and that the team is preparing for the first 24-month closing visits. This raised an important question: What would young people want to know after taking part in a study for two years? The young experts stressed that participants should be kept informed about how the study is progressing, how their data is being used, and what kinds of results are coming out of the project.
