Symposium and Exhibition on the Impact of War-Related Psychotrauma – Jan 25
- December 11, 2024
On January 7, 2025, an intimate symposium and exhibition will take place in Maastricht (The Netherlands), focusing on the profound impact of war-related psychotrauma on the health of multiple generations. Several scientist connected to the Youth-GEMs consortium are invited as speakers.
Exhibition
The exhibition features a unique collection of over 200 drawings by French political prisoner Despaux (1906-1969), created during his imprisonment in the Buchenwald concentration camp. These drawings, made on stolen notepaper and the back of Nazi correspondence, were donated to Henri (Rik) Vanmolkot, a 23-year-old Leuven medical student and fellow prisoner, in the early 1960s. Despaux saved Vanmolkot’s life in the camp, and they became lifelong friends. The original drawings are made available for this exhibition by the Vanmolkot family, with three generations (son, grandson, and great-grandson) currently affiliated with the Faculty of Health, Medicine & Life Sciences of Maastricht University.
Symposium
The symposium, titled “Impact of War-Related Psychotrauma on the Health of Multiple Generations”, will precede the exhibition’s opening. Experts will discuss the long-term impact of war traumas on both mental and physical health from scientific, clinical, and experiential perspectives. They will highlight the crucial roles of social connection, art, and personal meaning-making in dealing with these traumas. Additionally, new insights into how traumatic events can affect future generations through biological processes will be presented.
