Our team
Meet the Young Experts
Our Young Experts from Euro Youth Mental Health are aged 18 to 26 and represent over 10 European countries. With firsthand mental health experience—either personally or through their inner circle—they ensure our research remains deeply connected to the realities of young people’s lives.
At Youth-GEMS, they drive change through two key avenues: Science Cafes, where they offer monthly feedback and share insights on specific research topics, and deeper co-production activities, where they work alongside researchers to provide strategic advice, co-author studies, and much more.
Get to know some of their stories below!
Irene, 25
Italy
Irene is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Psychology of Community, Wellness, and Social Change. Passionate about the subject, she is always eager to take part in new experiences, such as joining EYMH. Irene values the opportunity to leverage personal experience with mental health as an asset within an organization. It was something Irene never thought possible, but as a Young Expert, Irene has been able to apply lived experience to projects like Youth Gems and Bootstrap.
One of the aspects Irene particularly enjoys is participating in meetings that bring together both researchers and Young Experts. These meetings foster a unique exchange of knowledge, intertwining theoretical and practical insights from both perspectives. After each meeting, Irene feels energized and enriched by the experience.
Lotte, 26
The Netherlands
Lotte is a 25-year old Dutch researcher with extensive expertise in autism, youth care and mental health care. She completed a bachelor and two masters in literature with a focus on disabilities in Dutch literature. She is currently working as a researcher at an University of Applied Sciences and she is working independently on her own interests, such as the influences of written texts on the perception of disabilities.
As a researcher she works on different projects such as disability studies, participation, languages and literature at multiple institutions in the Netherlands. Lotte is committed to improving the mental health system and overall system not only in the Netherlands but also globally. With a strong desire to make a positive difference, Lotte is an invaluable asset to the Youth-GEMS project team.
Filip, 25
Poland
Filip has a keen interest in neurodiversity. Motivated by this passion, he joined Youth-GEMs to contribute to improving the quality of mental healthcare for young people with all types of brains. Youth-GEMs resonates deeply with Filip’s personal experiences, as it explores the neurological impact of various genetic and environmental factors, including trauma, which disproportionately affects disabled, neurodivergent, and queer youth.
Guiomar, 25
Spain
Guiomar is a clinical psychologist based in Madrid, Spain. She is also part of a research group focused on studying motherhood.
Her passion for mental health advocacy is rooted in personal experience. Growing up, conversations about mental health were rare, and young people had little access to information that was accessible, reliable, and truly helpful. This lack of awareness and resources is what drives Guiomar’s commitment to Youth-GEMs. She values the project’s dedication to youth well-being and the collaborative effort of people from different backgrounds coming together to make a difference.
Dennis, 21
Austria
Dennis is a Bc Biology and Bc Pharmacy Student from Vienna. Personally affected by mental health problems from an early age and only having been diagnosed with the root cause years later in adulthood, he wants to spread awareness about young people with asymptomatic mental health conditions.
As a neurodivergent person with a learning disability, he has a keen interest in study techniques, personal knowledge management and the neurological processes of brain plasticity and adaptability. EYMH’s science cafés present a wonderful opportunity to connect said interests with charity work and the goal of creating a better youth mental health support system for younger and future generations. Especially for those straying from established and possibly outdated psychological diagnostics criteria.
Samantha, 22
Luxembourg
Samantha is 22 years old and currently finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. In addition to her studies, she is active in several psychology-related organizations and partially involved in board-level work. These experiences reflect her strong commitment to mental health which has deepened both her academic and practical perspective. She plans to pursue a Master’s in Clinical Psychology to work with children and adolescents.
She believes that Youth-GEMs offers her a valuable opportunity to contribute meaningfully, grow through new experiences, and ensure that voices like hers—shaped by personal experience—are heard. She believes that by working together, we can raise awareness and create more inclusive, supportive mental health systems for young people across Europe.
Eva, 24
Greece
Eva is a Community Health Nurse and currently pursuing a master’s degree in Organizational/Industrial Psychology. She is currently based in Greece and actively works as a nurse.
Her previous experiences working in healthcare as well as personal ones lead her to join Youth-GEMs. Seeing the constant stigma and bias that follows mental health is making her eager to participate in this initiative and try to break the cycle while also gaining knowledge that she can implement in her work life and in the society.
