On 30 and 31 October 2025, the Youth-GEMs Consortium gathered in Milan, hosted by the Università degli Studi di Milano. The two-day meeting brought together partners from across Europe to share progress, strengthen collaboration, and set the stage for the next phase of the project.
After a warm welcome by coordinator Bart Rutten (Maastricht University), the agenda opened with updates from the Work Packages, covering Coordination and Project Management (WP1), Engagement, Ethics & Networking (WP2), Data Management (WP3), and Functional Genomics of the Human Brain (WP4). The afternoon concluded with an inspiring Euro Youth Mental Health session. In the evening, consortium members enjoyed dinner at Il Fortino, fostering connection beyond the meeting room.
Day two began with a presentation from Annamaria Cattaneo on the Horizon-funded HappyMums Project, followed by updates on Data Inference (WP5), Data Integration & Prediction (WP6), and Clinical Innovation (WP7). The discussions focused on aligning scientific progress with the recommendations from the recent EU review and exploring how to ensure coherence across Work Packages.
In the afternoon, two breakout sessions encouraged open discussion and problem-solving. The first, led by Cova Martínez Díaz-Caneja, focused on recruitment for our clinical study, while the second, hosted by Erika van Hell, explored Youth-GEMs exploitation including next steps for sustainability. Throughout the meeting, the consortium reaffirmed its shared mission: to advance understanding of youth mental health through genomic and environmental research.
A special thank-you goes to our hosts from HappyMums (Annamaria Cattaneo, Libera Cavaliere, PMP®, Floriana De Cillis) and our colleagues from Catalyze Group (Donna van Dommelen and Chantal Van Opbergen) for their excellent organization and hospitality and to all consortium members, members of our Advisory Board and Young Experts for their inspiring contributions.
Grazie Mille!
