Youth expertise at the heart of pedagogy: Youth-GEMs presentation at the VBSP Conference in the Netherlands
- October 3, 2025
Researchers Hanske Douwenga and Lisette van der Poel (Hogeschool Utrecht) gave a presentation at the biennial conference of the Vereniging tot Bevordering van de Studie der Pedagogiek (VBSP), the Dutch Association for the Advancement of the Study of Pedagogy.
This special edition of the conference took place on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 October 2025 and marked the 100th anniversary of the VBSP. For a century, the VBSP has been committed to strengthening the quality of pedagogical education in the Netherlands. The anniversary was celebrated with a two-day conference aimed at lecturers from higher professional education programmes in pedagogy, as well as other interested professionals.
During their session, Hanske and Lisette shared insights from Youth-GEMs on the crucial role of youth lived experience in research. Young people with personal experience bring unique and valuable perspectives that can significantly enhance the quality and relevance of research, provided that this expertise is recognised and handled with care.
Actively involving youth experts in every phase of the research process fosters meaningful collaboration and leads to more insightful and applicable outcomes. Within Youth-GEMs, young experts work closely with researchers and professionals in multiple ways. The consortium investigates how genetic and environmental factors influence the mental health of young people aged 12 to 24. The experiences and perspectives of the involved youth experts directly shape both research processes and outcomes.
The presentation offered concrete examples from Youth-GEMs of effective collaboration with youth experts and demonstrated how co-creation with young people can strengthen research and pedagogical practice.
