In Youth-GEMs we are currently developing a self-assessment app. This app can be used by youth as a mental health support tool. During this Science Café we discussed input from our young experts to shape the app.
Margherita La Gamba, one of our researchers, presented an overview of earlier collected feedback and suggestions for the self-assessment app. Together with the young experts the following top 6 of most important app features was made:
- Personal resources (coping strategies, sensory and emotional regulation techniques)
- Tools for goal setting
- Educational content (e.g. healthy habits)
- Synchronization with existing apps
- Journaling mode
- Sensory tracking
Margherita and her team of Ab.Abacus analysed which features are easy or harder to implement and combined their findings with the top 6 of the young experts. In order to shape the content of the app, Lisette van der Poel (Developmental Psychologist At the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht) asked the young experts for exercises, methods or other material for emotional regulation, positive affirmation and sensory regulation that could be implemented in the app. A lot of creative techniques were brought up (we will share them on our socials) to take someone’s mind of certain difficult feelings. A lot of these exercises and techniques could indeed be implemented in the app in the future.
The co-creative approach were researchers connect and discuss with young experts is valuable. Find out more about our Science Cafés via Science Cafés – Youth-GEMs.
