Marta Ferrer came back to the Science Café community to give an update on the clinical study (which will be developed in work package 7). Administrative and legal procedures to prepare this study are finalised and the recruitment phase of respondents is next in line. With respect to the questionnaire to be used in this study, the results of a systematic review were taken into account. The systematic review though, which focussed on studies targeting transdiagnostic measures in the age of 12-24 year, revealed that many existing questionnaires were not sufficient with regard to our specific study. For the recruitment of respondents a flyer will be used; young experts were invited to give their feedback on the flyer.
Marta also shared some experiences regarding the ECNP New Frontiers meeting she attended with colleagues. Some researchers there were into precision & personalised psychiatry, aiming for medication or interventions that are personalised, whereas others considered psychiatric disorders as transdiagnostic overlapping. Young experts commented: ‘some people just need validation rather than treatment, ’ ‘sometimes medication does not make sense, and there is a tendency to medicalise,’ and ‘personalised treatment should look at the whole person and also not only stick to standard categorisations such as DSM.’
Next guests in this Science Café were Flore Joskin and Carolina Vieira (both communication professionals for the Youth-GEMs consortium). They gave a short update on communication activities so far and the possible next steps. Within our consortium communication activities vary from meetings to developing and updating the website and from social media streams to co-creation with researchers and young experts. Publishing in journals, presentations on conferences, summits and meetings are also activities that are linked to the communication strategy. During the Science Café, young experts where invited to give their feedback on the website and social media. Their input will be used to create new content and a relaunch of the website.
