The Youth-GEMs project is excited to launch the Youth-GEMs Podcast – a new space where Young Experts and project researchers come together to explore youth mental health through open dialogue!
Designed to make science more accessible and engaging, the podcast brings lived experience and scientific research into dialogue, helping audiences better understand the complex factors shaping young people’s mental health.
The Youth-GEMs podcast
The Youth-GEMs Podcast is a meeting point where young voices and scientific research come together to explore youth mental health. Each episode features a conversation between a Young Expert and a researcher involved in the project, exploring the science, motivations and people behind the research.
Through relaxed and thoughtful discussions, guests share their experiences, the questions driving their work, and why their research matters for young people today. Most importantly, the podcast places young voices at the centre, creating a space where Young Experts and researchers can learn from each other and explore youth mental health together.
Inside the pilot episode
The pilot episode features a conversation between Young Expert Eden Byrne and Youth-GEMs researcher Winnie Schalkwijk, a PhD student at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Together, they explore the broader goals of the Youth-GEMs project and dive into an intriguing topic: how our physical health, immune system and mental health may be connected.
Winnie shares insights from her research on epigenetics, a rapidly evolving field that examines how our environment and experiences can influence how genes function. Using data from long-term youth studies, she investigates how factors such as stress during adolescence and relationships with others may shape biological processes linked to mental health later in life.
Their conversation highlights just how interconnected our bodies and minds are – and how understanding these connections could help researchers better support resilience and wellbeing in young people.
