This Science Café was all about science communication and ESM-research. Young experts of EYMH reflected together with the invited researchers on these topics.
Anna Wiersema and Sanne Berkers are researchers in WP-4 working with molecular methods for research purposes in a lab. They are eager to engage everybody in the conversation of the research and would like to bridge the lived experience perspective with their work. As a method they propose to set up a series of video’s for Youth-GEMs.
Creating a series of videos in which we present the work from the various work packages in an accessible way. We do this by bringing young experts and young researchers together in a filmed conversation. The conversation makes clear what the work within a specific work package entails and why it is relevant. Key is to bring in the perspective of a young expert and not just present the scientist as the ‘main speaker’. The idea of these video’s originated from conversations in the science cafes where this equal conversations naturally take place.
In this science café the plan and some practical challenges were discussed. We will keep you updated on the next steps!
Besides being a Dutch clinician (psychologist) and working with people aged 16-25 years old, Jindra Bakker is a researcher at Maastricht University. In her research she uses the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) where the daily live of a person is taken into account. People are not stable and (mental health) symptoms can influence each other. Memory is always biased, thus doing diagnostics can be similar to ‘taking snapshots of daily live’. In (our) ESM-research we try to measure mental states in their context by using an app. We ask how people are doing and ask information about their context. We do that several times a day over multiple days.
Some of the young experts have tested the app and suggested the following: questions should not be difficult to answer and should be applicable to a larger group of people. Could the number of questions irritate people? And what if people are not allowed to use their phones? Of course these questions and remarks will be checked.
